Flowers in Beijing
In preparation for the 2008 Olympic games, over 40 million flowers were planted in the areas surrounding the Olympic venues. The flowers chosen had to withstand the incredible heat of China in the summer. Over 20 species of heat-resistant, seasonal flowers were chosen. All of this was done due to a commitment China made to hold a "Green Olympics". The flowers can also be seen at the Olympic gardens and Tiananmen Square.

Flowers and Happiness
We often purchase flowers to celebrate a special occasion or demonstrate our love for someone. However, few people truly understand the benefits of such a gift. It has been scientifically proven that flowers actually promote happiness!
Researchers analyzed the responses of people who received flowers as a gift in comparison with other presents. The conclusion based on the initial smile, the following facial expression, and the placement of the gift in a common space, demonstrated that flowers do make people happier than comparable gifts such as candles. Also, it has been proven that people who wake up to the sight and smell of flowers have an elevated smell throughout the day and are less likely to suffer from stress or depression.
But don't take my word for it. Do your own research and find out how a gift of fresh flowers can bring happiness to your loved one!

Corpse Flower
The University of Connecticut is plugging its nose in preparation for the Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanium) to bloom, an event that has not taken place in the Northeast for 60 years. When it blooms, the smell is said to resemble old road kill. When it opens, the plant is about the temperature of a human body, which helps to make it smell even worse. Its also speculated that this heat can help attract pollinators such as flies. The plant will only remain open for a few days at the most. Admission to this event is free, so you better get there early to save a seat!
