The Color of Carnations

Just as different rose colors have different meanings, the same goes for carnations, as well. For instance, pink signifies "I will never forget you." Red says, "My heart aches for you," as well as expresses admiration. Purple communicates hostility and ill will, and striped carnations imply, "I'm sorry; I can't be with you." White is lovely, as it conveys pure love and innocence, while yellow indicates disdain and rejection.

The Color of Roses
I think it's interesting that different colored roses signify various meanings. For instance, if you give someone red roses, it means you're romantically interested in them (well, not hard to figure out!) But pink roses signify appreciation, yellow ones are given to friends, peach is for sympathy, and orange ones (my personal favorite!) can indicate desire for the recipient. Purple roses are the most interesting: they are a sign of love at first sight! White roses are a good choice for people that want to convey reverence or humility, where light pink ones show the recipient that you admire them.

Edible Flowers
The first time I ever saw my date eat a flower from his plate at a restaurant, I thought he was just trying to impress me - with how foolish he could be. It turns out that there really are edible flowers. For instance, all herb flowers are edible. These include Italian Mint, Lavender, and Lemon Thyme - all great on salads. But ones that people may be more familiar with are pansies, squash blossoms, and nasturtiums. A great thing to do with edible flowers is to put small ones in ice cube trays and use the ice to pretty up your punch bowl.

Rosebushes
If you really love roses but hate paying the exhorbitant prices that a florist charges, you should think about planting rosebushes. We've planted dozens of white rosebushes around our house, and my husband is forever cutting them and putting them into vases, and I love it. The secret is: rose food. If you put this on the bushes, you will be handsomely rewarded! Keep in mind, though, that there are two downsides to rosebushes: thorns and deadheading. It's important to cut the heads off the dead roses because the bushes will bloom again that much sooner, but it's difficult to do because of all the thorns. Just make sure to wear heavy gloves.
