In preparation for the 2008 Olympic games, over 40 million flowers were planted in the areas surrounding the Olympic venues. The flowers chosen had to withstand the incredible heat of China in the summer. Over 20 species of heat-resistant, seasonal flowers were chosen. All of this was done due to a commitment China made to hold a "Green Olympics". The flowers can also be seen at the Olympic gardens and Tiananmen Square.
